Getting tweens moving with HopeLab

While a partner at Daylight, I led the user experience design effort behind HopeLab’s Zamzee offering. We were asked to help HopeLab tackle the challenge of childhood obesity by motivating kids to be more active.

To figure out how to approach this difficult problem, we observed kids in urban apartments, rural towns, and after-school programs across America. These insights drove a vast array of ideas that could be tested with users. The most promising were refined and combined into a final product and service. The resulting offering, Zamzee , is a pocket-sized activity meter that connects to a motivational game-based website.

Zamzee has been proven to increase physical activity levels in kids by 59 percent over a six-month period and reduce biological risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. The program was also honored by President Barack Obama as part of an initiative to find the most promising nonprofits in America.
